Ultra High Strength Steel Castings

Steels with very high strength levels are often referred to as ultra high strength steel castings.

The definition of ultra high strength is arbitrary because no universally accepted strength level has been established for the term. Furthermore, as steel castings with increasingly higher strengths have been developed, the range of strengths that fall within this definition has steadily increased.

The class of ultra high strength steel castings is quite broad and includes several distinctly different steel families. The effects of thermal treatments on the properties of many ultra high strength steels have been extensively investigated.

The ultra high strength steel castings are those alloys capable of attaining a minimum yield strength of at least 1380 MPa (200 ksi). Their applications tend to concentrate in the aerospace and defense industries.
